Yue Wu, known to most of us as Jennifer, will aim for one of four available trial spots at the 2017 US National Team Trial next week in North Carolina. The Triangle Table Tennis Center will host a number of the top players in the country as they aim to earn their spot at the 2017 ITTF Leibherr World Table Tennis Championships. For Wu this is an opportunity which hasn't presented itself in the past, but now she will have a chance to represent the USA at a World Championships for the first time.
"I really want to make it! I have never played in the world championships before so I will try my very best in the trial," says an excited Jennifer who seems to relish the thought of a new opportunity. Wu has already shown her ability to perform at the highest levels, winning the crowns at the 2016 North American Championships and more notably the 2015 Pan American Games where she came in as an unseeded player and was able to beat some high level opposition from Brazil to take gold.
Wu recently competed in the NCTTA South Regional for Texas Wesleyan University where she won the women's singles over trial opponent Wang Chen. Wu who has been preparing for the trial in Texas and more recently back at her home in New Jersey said the timing and the competition of the trials provided the perfect warmup and leadup to the team trial.
"I feel good. I didn't think so much about the other players, I just need to be ready to fight for every ball," says Wu, who points out that her focus will solely lie upon herself and her final preparation rather than on her opposition.
No doubt with the experience of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games behind her she will prove to be a strong contender for the event an possibly even the favorite against the current field. Only time will tell, be sure to tune in next week as the 2017 US National Team Trial kicks off at Triangle Table Tennis Center, 23-26 March.
