USA Medal Tally Continues in Slovenia
Just a week ago in Croatia Team USA were out in force and collecting medals across multiple events, the impressive efforts of the Alguettis along with Amy Wang and Victor Liu saw victories found across Cadet team events, singles and doubles with medals in both cadet and junior categories. In Slovenia their hard work continued.
The successful duo of Gal and Sharon Alguetti had taken away gold in Croatia and again found themselves on the podium in Slovenia, this time with silver. Impressive clear wins over Slovenia and Chile-Croatia brought them through to the final where they battled all the way to the showdown, losing out 3-2 to Germany for the gold medal.
It was a similar story in the Junior Boy's Team event with Victor Liu continuing with his teammates of a week ago from Chinese Taipei. They overcame Austria and Germany to earn a finals spot, eventually losing 3-2 to Japan and taking away silver also.
Amy Wang was the player to find success in the Team events, joining forces with a strong Japanese team and storming past Croatia 3-0 in the semifinal and defeating a joint Hungary-Chinese Taipei trio to claim the gold medal with Amy pushing her opponent the full 5 games. A solid effort.
Amy Wang came into the Cadet Girls Singles event at the top of the draw and showed no sign of letting anyone get a look in. She breezed through the qualification groups and went through the main draw, winning both her first two matches 3-0, before winning the semifinal and final stages both 3-1. A fantastic gold result for Amy and a strong performance to hold her seeding under pressure.
Two more medals achieved in the Cadet Boys Singles with Sharon Alguetti striking bronze and Victor Liu going one step further to take silver. Victor forced the big upset with a 3-2 win over top seed, and currently ranked 16th Cadet player in the World, Takeru Kashiwa of Japan. A superb pressure play 12-10 in the deciding set of the semifinal stage. Both US players lost out to Feng Yi-Hsin of Chinese Taipei, the gold medalist, both by 3-1.
Amy Wang wasn't done with surprises yet and continued her impressive run by making the final of the Junior Girls Singles. Her Serbian quarterfinal opponent had beaten the top seed Takeuchi of Japan and in beating her 11-8 in the 7th, Amy was able to take control of the top half of the draw. She took out Pavlovic of Croatia in 6 to reach the final before losing 4-1 to Yuko Kato of Japan in the final.
Victor Liu was able to capture bronze in the junior boys singles with a tight 4-3 win over USA teammate Adar Alguetti in the quarterfinals. His opponent Yu Kamayu also won in 7 over Sharon Alguetti. Yu was able to win the semifinal match 4-0 over Liu.
All in all an incredibly impressive couple of weeks in Croatia and Slovenia for our players and we couldn't be prouder of their efforts. Well fought for, well deserved and much experience gained for their futures as international players. Congratulations!
