Atlanta Open 9/24/2016
Something special happened in Atlanta, Georgia this past Saturday! A USATT 2 Star Sanctioned tournament Hosted by the Atlanta Georgia Table Tennis Association, Inc. (AGTTA) and Operated by the Cedar Rapids Table Tennis Club (CRTTC)! Over 95 Players participated, one of the largest tournaments in Atlanta history, excepting the 1996 Olympics, and the Georgia Games tournament Hosted and Operated by AGTTA. We could not have events like this without the help and support of the USATT, and especially Gordon Kaye, President – USATT.
AGTTA President Brian Crisp, and CRTTC President Meng-Yu Wang collaborated long distance with the help of Zongjiang Huang of the CRTTC and Wendell Dillon AGTTA Tournament Director, to sponsor, and operate this event. It was successful by all standards.
The event should raise awareness of Table Tennis in the Atlanta Area and Georgia as well as the surrounding states.
The tournament has brought players and coaches from other local professional clubs like the AITTA club, run by Shigang Yang, and EC Sports run by Amy Feng. There were players from NCTTA schools like Florida State (with NCTTA President Willy Leparulo), Auburn and Virginia Tech. Also, the recently appointed Youth Director for AGTTA, Eric Xie, played along with a number of our favorite youth players. Many youth players get their start at AGTTA, in the Atlanta area due to the FREE Coaching program on Sunday’s by AGTTA member ITTF Level II coaches.
Yijun Feng, current Olympian was one of our volunteer coaches. The free coaching is led by AGTTA Director of Player Development, Petro Stirbu and a team of coaches.
AGTTA sponsors the Junior Table Tennis Foundation (JTTF) tournament each year due to our commitment to the sport and the Youth of our area. We also sponsor the Regional NCTTA (National Collegiate Table Tennis Association tournaments in Atlanta.
Some of our favorite youth players from around the area are: David and Michael Fu, Randy Bai, Brandon Koh, Emille Lin, Daniel Ng, Anna Nguyen, Cynthia Ruan, Ethan Ruan, Kaitlyn Sung, Eric Xie, Andrew Yang, Calvin Zhang, Carl Zhou, Dhyuti Gopalanoski, and Sabrina Zhu. AGTTA President, Brian Crisp, says it has been a pleasure to watch these young people go from beginners to advanced players, and to leaders in the JTTF and AGTTA over the years.
Meng-Yu and the CRTTC did an outstanding job of operating the tournament. They are operating several tournaments throughout the country similar to this one. Meng-Yu is doing tournaments in Iowa City, Kansas City, Cedar Rapids, and Oakland later this year. An avid player himself, Meng-Yu has all the skills to operate and understand the tournament needs of USATT organizations and players.
