Amy Wang Makes Impressive Bronze Effort in Croatia
USA's Amy Wang has shown an incredible performance in Croatia by claiming bronze in the Junior Girls Singles event at the 2016 ITTF Junior and Cadet Open. Wang who has had a strong standing on the World Cadet stage scored a series of outstanding wins to punch through the draw in the junior division this weekend just passed among some of the world's best young players.
Taking two wins over her Russian and Romanian opponents in the group stage, she was able to come out on top despite a close 3-2 loss to the number 4 player from Moldova. A good start was just a platform for her further success going into the main draw.
Into the round of 32 she led out with a comfortable 4-1 win over Elizabet Abraamian from Russia, sliding to a 3-0 lead before losing one tight 14-12 set before closing out 11-6 to move through to the last 16 players.
Coming up against a tough German opposition it took a game before Wang found her ground and moved to take the next 3 sets to lead 3-1. It took a strong effort to finish off the German, eventually winning 4-2. The quarterfinals would see her play Kukulkova from Slovakia who she showed great resolve against, finding victory in 5 games and moving through to the semifinal and the guarantee of a medal.
The semifinal match was a showdown with Su Pei-Ling of Chinese Taipei and stretched to 6 games with Amy losing out 4-2, making a great start to win the first and fighting to stay in the game also winning the 5th. Her successor went on to win the event with a stunning win over the top seed from Japan.
