Zheng Levels with World's Elite in Sweden

2016 US Olympian Jiaqi Zheng sprung a surprise upset in the ITTF Sweden Open 2016 and almost caught another after she worked her way into the main draw. Sitting top of the group in her qualification round it was a great start for Jiaqi to win her two group matches and make the main draw.

Her first round match (round of 64) would provide a tough opponent, ranked 45th in the world and the 2013 European Champion, Li Fen from Sweden. With a peak WR of 17th she has had her fair share of top results in the past few years. Jiaqi didn't seem the least bit intimidated, taking off to a flying start and claiming the first three games of the match 7, 8 and 7. Combining short touch play and blistering attacking plays across the table it wasn't long before Jiaqi closed out the match 4-1.

Heading into the next match, the round of 32, Jiaqi almost clawed another big upset. Playing Sinapore's Zhou Yihan, ranked 32 in the world and the upcoming star of the Singapore National Team, Jiaqi at one point held a 2-1 lead in the match before stumbling and falling behind 3-2. Alas she was not ruled out and won the 6th game 11-6 in a solid display of table tennis. Sadly in the 7th game it was the Singapore player who sealed the win and won 11-7 to take the match 4-3 and move on into the round of 16.

All in all a superb showing for Rio Olympian Jiaqi Zheng and a stunning upset over the former European Champion on home ground! Congratulations!
