USATT Insider poses 11 questions to Paddle Palace's Tom Roeser

1) Why do you play?
Table Tennis is one of the only things that puts me in a good mood, and also keeps me focused. Perfect combination.

2) Which is your favorite tournament?
I haven't played in many other tournaments, but the Rose City Open here in Portland has always been a great time.

3) Who is your primary nemesis?
My friends, Brian Yoder and Mike Aguilar. We all play very differently and often learn new things in order to win against each other.

4) What is your favorite game tactic to score?

It usually involves a backhand down the line.

5) Thoughts on the Poly Ball.
I love it. The game plays a bit differently, but Table Tennis has survived much bigger changes than this.

6) Toughest Loss?

The U1200 final at the first USATT tourney I ever played in. I clearly remember choking so hard at deuce in the fifth. It haunts me.

7) Greatest Win?
Making it to the final of the u1700 a couple years ago. I didn't think I would even get out of the group.

8) How you prepare for a tournament?
I like to enter the Open singles, as I've found that getting absolutely crushed makes me relax and play better in events I stand a more realistic chance of doing well in. There's probably an easier way to attain that state of mind.

9) When you see a new player at the club, what do you do?

Say hello and hit around a bit.

10) Player you would most like to play in a tournament?
Probably Timo Boll, he seems like such a nice guy!

11) If you had to face Lily Zhang or Kanak Jha what would your game plan be?

Set up an elaborate series of traps and delays that prevent them from reaching the court in time. Outthink your opponents!
