USATT Insider poses 11 questions to Dallas's Sam Smith

1) Why do you play?
For fun, to be around friends, to compete.

I really enjoyed playing the team tournament in Detroit. That tournament highlighted our sport and all of the amazing reasons why I play table tennis.

3) Who is your primary nemesis?
Mostly local club members. I've not practiced to play tournaments in a while.

4)What is your favorite game tactic to score?
Serve under spin and have it returned to my backhand for a loop.

5) Thoughts on the Poly Ball.
The Nittaku balls are good. Xu sha fa are okay too. All in all I think it was a good move. Except when playing with a ball that is bigger than 40mm.

6) Toughest Loss?
Too many to recall. 😊

7) Greatest Win?
I beat Barry Dattel in the US Open in Houston TX. He was over 2400 I think!

8) How you prepare for a tournament?
Multi ball drills 3 weeks in advance 1 or twice a week. Ride my bike, match play until 2 days before. Rest and head into battle.

9) When you see a new player at the club, what do you do?
Introduce myself and the others players in the club.

10)  Player you would most like to play in a tournament?
Hard to say. I've not been practicing these days.

11)  If you had to face Lily Zhang or Kanak Jha what would your game plan be?
Put them on the defense when as soon as possible, change the pace of the ball.
