Table tennis fans hoping to see some star power at the 2015 US Open may be in luck. As well as having some of the best American players participating, the US Open will feature Nigerian Quadri Aruna, one of the rising stars in the sport of Table Tennis.
Aruna, 26, is currently ranked number 44 in the world in the ITTF World Rankings, and was ranked as high as number 30 earlier in 2015. With a rapid ascension in the rankings, last year was a breakout year for Aruna, as he was named the ITTF Star Player of the Year for 2014 at a January award ceremony in Dubai. This was the first such distinction earned by a player from Africa.
Not only is he one of the rising stars in the table tennis world, but he is also one of the most well-liked athletes on the tour. As well as winning an ITTF Star Player award, Aruna was also named to Premium Times’ Top 14 Sports Personalities of the Year.
Some of Aruna’s top accomplishments include participating in the 2012 London Olympics, defeating top-ranked players such as China’s Xu Xan and Fan Zhendong, as well as reaching the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup.
