11 Questions with Homer Brown

1) Why do you play?

I find the sport of table tennis to be both fun and exciting to play and it is such a great way to release stress and lose weight. It also takes your mind off everything that is going on in life...

2) Which is your favorite tournament?

The US Open for sure especially when I made it a lifetime goal to attend and participate in it every year and this Summer it will be 47 in a row.

3) Who is your primary nemesis?

I would say it would have to be David Sakai because he has gone to so many tournaments in his life and he is a such a tournament player and warrior at the table.

4) What is your favorite game tactic to score?

It must be the Homer Brown "Knee Special Serve" that I have long been known to use when needed.

5) Thoughts on the Poly Ball

Not sure about the new ball, however I hear that it has slowed the game down some and that could be good for my style of play.

6) Toughest Loss?

I would say it has been Larry Thoman several times in many finals during my early years of playing.

7) Greatest Win?

I would say that my best wins would be winning the National US Open Men's Singles Consolation in 1971 and also winning both the Singles and Doubles in the National Senior Olympics for the over 50-54 age group in 1999.

And my 3 key accomplishments would be the following:

  • Starting BumperNets "America's First Table Tennis Store" in a mall in 1999 and being able to grow it every year for 16 years.
  • Coaching my son Adam at a young age of 8 to win the US Open National National Championships for the 10 and under boys and girls event in 1989 at Miami, Florida.
  • Being able to attend and participate in 46 US Opens in a row and being healthy to make it happen.

8) How you prepare for a tournament?

I start practicing more and working on my footwork and timing with the robot.

9) When you see a new player at the club, what do you do?

I make sure that all our customers are greeted by myself or our other BumperNets employees with a friendly greeting and also assure that we introduce them to other customers and players.

10) Player you would most like to play in a tournament?

JO Waldner from Sweden for sure.

11) If you had to face Jimmy Butler what would your game plan be?

I would make the match look as exciting as possible and attack whenever I can and also use the shuffle and knee special serves too....
