Maryland Table Tennis Center Dominant at 2015 Butterfly Cary Cup
At the 2015 Butterfly Cary Cup, over 13 players from Maryland Table Tennis Center (MDTTC) competed for top titles. MDTTC, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, has had a long history of bringing up elite national players for generations. In recent years, the club has invested in training partners and coaches from China to further enhance the level of training available to club members. These player-coaches in addition to home-grown MDTTC junior talents like Crystal Wang, Derek Nie and Lisa Lin fought hard during this weekend’s competition, and swept many of the top titles.
Junior super-star Crystal Wang was the only female player to qualify into Division A, where she finished fifth in her group. She succeeded in beating Han Xiao, David Cui, Alexander Holm and Alexander Bu, but succumbed to the top 4 players (Kai Zhang, Jeffrey Zeng, Zongqi Zhong, Zirui Zhao). Although she did not advance into the final knock-out draw, she won the top female athlete prize and goes home with $300 in cash and prizes. Fellow junior player Derek Nie took control of the B Division, rolling to a victory on Sunday in the final round robin consisting of the top players from each of the 4 Division B Giant Round Robins. Derek goes home with $375 in cash and prizes for his success in Division B. Similarly, 10-year old Lisa Lin swept the D division, taking out players many times her age and size to win the $80 top prize.
In the Division A, 4 MDTTC player-coaches advanced into the final 16: fourth seed Ruichao Chen, Group 2 surprise winner Bowen Chen, 2011 Cary Cup Champion Jeffrey Zeng and MDTTC new-comer Jianhao Sun. All four won their opening round matches to book a place in the quarterfinal. In the quarterfinal, MDTTC players made up 4 of the 8 competitors, with Ruichao Chen and Bowen Chen succeeding and moving on into the semi-final. Regrettably, both players succumbed in the penultimate round, with no MDTTC players reaching the final. However, with strong performances in all divisions, MDTTC players will travel home proud of their performances at one of the east coast’s most prominent tournaments.
