Athletes of the Month - June

Paralympic Gold & Bronze Medalist Tahl LEIBOVITZ (Queens, NY) capped off a very strong month of June with 4 medals (2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze) as a participant in the Para tournaments in Spain and Romania. At the PTT Spanish Open in El Prat de Llobregat Spain on June 18-22, Leibovitz took a Bronze medal in Class 9 Singles losing to eventual winner Koyo IWABUCHI (JPN) 3-1 in the semi-finals. In the class 9 team event Leibovitz partnered up with Dutch Max VAN AMERONGEN to beat Spain 3-2 for the Gold.

The following week in Cluj Napoca, Romania, Leibovitz got revenge and took gold in Class 9 Singles play over Aviv GORDON (ISR) 3-0 in the Romanian International Table Tennis Open. In the combined Class 9-10 Team event, Leibovitz paired with Gordon to take the silver at the hands of a combined team of Poland/ Montenegro 3-0.

Leibovitz will be participating in the 2015 US Open in Las Vegas July 6-10 in addition to the Para Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Angela Guan

2015 World Team Member Angela Guan (San Jose, CA) won a bronze medal at the 2015 Puerto Rico Junior & Cadet Open in Aguada, Puerto Rico on June 19 – 21. Guan seeded 3/4 in the event won her round of 16 match 4-0 over Lineris RIVERA (PUR) and followed with another 4-0 victory over Fernanda KODAMA (BRA) in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Guan’s progress was stopped by top seeded Bruna TAKAHASHI (BRA) in a tough fought 4-2 match. Guan will be participating in the 2015 US Open in Las Vegas on July 6-10.

Jenson Van Emburgh and Jesse Cejudo

2014 Para Romania Open15 year old Jenson Van Emburgh (Belleaire Beach , FL) and Jessie Cejudo (Phoenix, AZ) dominated the entire field by winning the Men’s Class 1-3 at the Club Sportiv Lamont Romanian International Table Tennis Open in Cluj-Napoca on June 26th. The American team swept the preliminary pool play with 3-0 wins over Croatia, Taipei 2 and a mixed team of Montenegro/Taipei. In the semi-finals, Team USA dispatched Taipei 1 in straight matches 3-0 and then finished up with another 3-0 victory over the team of ELIE, El Rahbany (LIB) and MITROVIC, Nenad (SRB).

In prior Class 3 singles play, Van Emburgh scored a bronze medal while Cejudo reached the quarterfinals. USA Table Tennis is very proud of Jenson and Jessie’s strong finish after a very demanding European tour. Jenson's next tournament with be the 2015 Para Pan Am Games in Toronto while Jesse will compete in the 2015 US Open in Las Vegas.


Honorable mention also goes to Aria Arratia and Hunter McAloose for their Gold Medal performance in the Class 7 Team event in Romania.
