Jimmy Butler Withdraws from Singles at the Pan American Games
A strained left Achilles has sidelined Butler for the singles competition beginning Wednesday. "Kanak Jha and Timothy Wang played like warriors out there. They almost single handedly carried us into the medal round," Butler said after the USA had multiple match points to advance to the medal round.
Against Puerto Rico, Kanak Jha had two match points against Bryan Afanador in match one and Butler/Wang had 3 match points in their doubles match. USA lost both of those matches and fell 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
"15 year old Kanak Jha is so special. "His performance the whole team event was nothing short of amazing for a 15 year old kid" Butler said. "Timothy Wang had a great performance also. I'm so proud of those two guys. Our coach, manager, the women's team and staff, everyone has winning attitudes."
When asked about his injury, Butler was optimistic for a full recovery. "I didn't want to risk tearing it in the singles competition. I just need rest and time to loosen my muscles a little. I'm going to be just fine."
