Decades of Friendship Draw Team “Arnold’s Avengers” to 2014 Butterfly Thanksgiving Teams
Jef Savage, team leader of “Arnold’s Avengers”, still remembers the first time he met 2014 Butterfly Thanksgiving Teams tournament director Danny Seemiller more than a decade and a half ago. Savage, originally from England, had recently moved to the United States and had traveled to Colorado Springs, CO for a coaching seminar led by Danny Seemiller and Mark Nordby in 2001. As one of the first arrivers, Savage explored his surroundings and accidentally ran into Seemiller and Nordby in their dorm rooms. Savage remembers Seemiller “acting like a normal guy”, and instantly connected with his modest and friendly approach to table tennis. The two became quick friends, and continued to keep in touch throughout the years.
More than 10 years after meeting Seemiller for the first time, Savage avidly signed up for the first Butterfly Thanksgiving Teams event held in 2012. He described his experience of that event as a “special occasion” where all of the tournament staff were extraordinarily personable and friendly. After seeing the entry form for this year’s event, Savage and his team did not hesitate to sign up again. In addition to enjoying a great table tennis competition held by friendly and familiar faces, Savage hopes to see his friend and role model, Danny Seemiller, again. Savage’s teammates Thomas Huff, Ben Arnold and Cheok Yeun Ng echo his desires to not only compete in the Butterfly Thanksgiving Teams tournament, but also to experience and enjoy an event that focuses exclusively on providing a good experience to the players. For Savage, and many of his teammates, this tournament may be one of the last they travel to before retiring from competitive play.
