Cary Cup kicked off with an exciting day of play on Friday where five new and sometimes surprising champions were named.

In the highly competitive Hardbat Open event Friday morning, Jim Butler (2557) took top prize beating Bin Hai Chu (2013 Cary Cup Hardbat Champion), Alec Carney, and Peng Xin in the final round robin. In the afternoon, multi-talented Butler put down his hardbat paddle, and picked up his sponge racket to take top honors in the Advanced (Over 1900) Singles Round Robin upsetting top seed Mingyu Shi (2796) in the final round robin. Mingyu Shi has only lost one other match on US soil (to Shuai Hao WR #16). Jim Butler, having just qualified last weekend for the US National Men’s Team, hopes to continue improving and building his game and confidence in the main event.

John Mar (2241) from Atlanta, Georgia took home top honors in the Friday Open event, causing many major upsets along the way. In the final round robin, John upset top seed Di Yu (2438), and beat James Wang (2161) and Tianming Xie (2149) to take top honors. With 22 years of experience, John attributes his win to his ability to stay relaxed and anticipate the other player’s shots.

Steven Hamilton (1880) and Shuxin Li (1490) took top honors in the Friday Intermediate and Beginning Round Robin Events.

No doubt that Jim Butler, John Mar, Mingyu Shi and many of the other top players from Friday’s event will be looking to cause even more upsets in the main event today.
