2014 North American Tour Update

2014 North American TourAbout one-fourth of the 2014 Tour has concluded. Players on the East Coast seem to have the upper hand in terms of rankings on the Tour Leaderboard. Liang Yonghui, the highest ranked West Coast player, only ranks sixth while players from East Coast take the #1, 2, 4, and 5 spots. On the other hand, West Coast players dominate in numbers. Here is the breakdown of all 34 players who have gained Tour points after three tournaments in New York and three in California:

  • California 19
  • New York 6
  • New Jersey 5
  • Texas 2
  • Canada 1
  • Oregon 1

At the end of the Tour, sixteen players, determined by the Tour points and requirements, will be invited to play in the 2014 North American Tour Grand Final for $10,150 in prize money. In the 2013 Grand Final the average rating of the 16 players was 2533, which would be 36th in the US Top Men’s Listing. It will be even stronger for the 2014 Grand Final. So far the Leaderboard includes:

  • #1 player in North America (Eugene Wang, #68 in the world)
  • Four out of the top 10 active male players in the US (#2, 4, 5, and 6)
  • Three out of the top 10 active female players in the US (#4, 7, and 10)
  • Top finishers in both Men’s and Women’s at the 2014 US Team Trials
  • Three 2014 US Men’s Team members
The Tour is growing. The number of tournaments in 2014 year increased from 15 to 22 – including 14 out of 19 four-star tournaments in 2014. The prize money for the Grand Final also increased 66% from 2013.
