USA Table Tennis Phenom, Ariel Hsing Captures ITTF North America Cup Crown

April 06, 2011, 5:17 p.m. (ET)

Teenager Ariel Hsing from San Jose, CA brought home the Women's Singles title at the inaugural ITTF North America Cup on Saturday 2nd April 2011 in Mississauga, Canada.
Ariel, just 15 years old, defeated top seeded Canadian Zhang Mo to clinch the title.  In a surprisingly one sided best of seven final, Ariel won in straight games (11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5).

The manner in which this talented youth secured the title was quite outstanding. She dropped just one game en route to the gold; that being in her quarter-final duel on the opening day, when she posted a five game win (13-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-3) over the host nation’s Ly Li Qian. On the second day of play, the American teenager was simply unstoppable.

As the second seed she beat USA compatriot 14 year old Lily Zhang, the third seed, in the semi-finals ( 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5) before overcoming Canada’s Zhang Mo, the no.1 seed. Ariel was disciplined from the very start never allowing Zhang Mo to establish her normal fluid rhythm.

There was a noticeable difference in the manner in which each player approached the contest. Ariel, six years the junior of Zhang Mo, was vocal, fists raised in salute upon winning a point. On the other hand Zhang Mo, never the most expressive of players, was passive, quiet, introverted and reserved.

The end result was a rather surprisingly one sided match with Ariel Hsing booking her place to the Intercontinental Table Tennis Cup to be staged in conjunction with the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup in Singapore commencing on Friday 28th October 2011. In Singapore, Ariel will become one of the youngest players ever to compete in the prestigious Women’s World Cup.

At the end of the month Ariel’s will represent the U.S. at the French Open Junior Championships followed by the World Championships in Rotterdam.
