Californian’s Ariel Hsing and Natalie Sun Dominate Table Tennis Italian Junior & Cadet Open and Finish European Tour in Austria

The Californian table tennis duo of Ariel Hsing (San Jose) and Natalie Sun (Mountain View) took control of the tables at the  2010 Italian Junior and Cadet Open in Lignano by finishing first and second, respectively, in the Cadet girl’s singles division. They also won the Cadet girl’s double division and brought home the silver in the Team Round from March 25-28.

Hsing, a two-time U.S. National Championships runner-up, cruised through the opening rounds of the Cadet girl’s singles division by defeating Dominika Vizinova of Slovakia and Nina Zupancic in straight games, 3-0. In the semifinals, Hsing dropped the first two games and fought back to claim the last three games against France’s Celine Pang to advance to the gold-medal match against her U.S. counterpart, Sun.

Sun, who is a new member of the U.S. National Table Tennis Team, produced similar results opening with a 3-0 victory over Italy’s Giorgia Piccolin. Her next two decisions, both 3-1, were over Poland’s Sandra Wabik and Romania’s Bernadette Balint.

The finals between the two Americans went the five-game distance. Sun started the championship set by winning the first two games, 11-6 and 13-11. Hsing came back to win the last three games and the championship by the scores of: 11-9, 11-8 and 11-6.

In the team round, Hsing and Sun partnered up and took control of the Romania B Team and Belarus, with a 3-1 victory in both contests. In the team championship, Hsing and Sun were dropped by the Romania A team, 3-0.

The Cadet girl’s double division was a full five games with Romania’s Irina Ciobanu and Bernadette Szocs. The U.S. tandem won the title by a 3-1 score, with the Romanians winning the first game, followed by the Hsing-Sun duo coming back with three consecutive wins of: 11-4, 11-7 and 11-9.

Immediately following the Italy tour, the two Americans traveled to Linz, Austria for the JOOLA Austrian Junior Open, April 1-3, where the talented athletes were tested in the Junior age group.

In Junior girl’s singles, both Hsing and Sun were eliminated in their first rounds. Hsing lost to Dina Meshref of Egypt in straight games, 4-0. Sun was dropped by Poland’s Katarzyna Slifirczyk, 4-2.

In the doubles division, the Californian duo lost 3-2 to Nadeen El-Dawlatly of Egypt and Daniela Rozinkova of Czech Republic.
