Andrea Diaz, a 17-year-old member of the Berkeley Aquatic Synchronized Swimming Team in Berkeley Heights, N.J., has been named the Athlete of the Month for May.

Andrea, from Westfield, N.J., is like a swimmer/coach for Berkeley Aquatic, according to teammate Siena Conney.

“She often runs our practice to help out, even at the cost of her own improvement, pool time, and routines. She comes up with our warmups, taps out our routines, offers criticism and compliments, and shoves aside all her personal problems at the door to the pool and just focuses on synchro,” Siena wrote in her nomination form. “She picks wonderful music, and offers input on suit designs. At meets, Andrea will help with makeup, knox, headpieces, anything. That’s not to say she doesn’t get stressed at competitions and practices, because we all do. But she pushes through, swims with a smile on her face, and always is a good sport to the other teams, coaches, and judges.”

Andrea leads the whole team, Conney said, and has sacrificed most of her senior year to ensure her teammates have improved enough to put on a good showing. She’s a student coach and coordinator of team training, team-building activities, routines and performances. She has been the state representative for USA Synchro and attended the United States Aquatic Sports Convention to support and enhance participation in the sport.

“Andrea attends a magnet school and wants to become an engineer. She is inquisitive in everything she does, and takes the lead on finding answers,” Conney said.

Andrea has received the Spanish Honors Award, the Scholar Athlete Award, and has been placed on the academic honor roll. She is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Student Movement Against Cancer, and Spanish Honor Society. She is the current President of the Spanish Honors Society, which raised more than $200 in support for the victims of the hurricane in Puerto Rico. She also established a tutoring system for the entire campus of the Union County Vocational Technical Schools, and is actively managing the Spanish tutoring program for 50 students. In addition, she is the Team Captain and Survivor Chair for her Relay for Life event.
