2021 USA Softball UIC Clinic

As we announced previously the dates are set for the 2021 USA Softball UIC Clinic. They are February 4-7, 2021. The hotel will be the Sheraton Downtown which we used last year. All the sessions including the banquet will be held in the Cox Center across the street from the hotel.

Jim Craig’s Committee is currently working on several aspects of the UIC Clinic including the breakout session topics and all the working pieces of the UIC Clinic. His committee is also having a contest for the submission of the clinic theme for next year’s clinic. The winner will have their UIC Clinic registration paid for by USA Softball. If you have any ideas for a theme please submit them to Jim Craig via email at buffump1@gmail.com

Reserve the dates as I am sure this event will top all the previous one. However, we cannot make it as good as it is without your participation and attendance so mark the dates.

All American Games

USA Softball will again be hosting the 12U All American Games at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium Complex on August 13th – 16th. We have asked each region to send us names for two to three umpires that would like to umpire this event. You have to pay your way to the event and rooming and game fees will be taken care of by the organizing committee. We expect to use 3 umpires per field for every game. If you are interested contact your Local Association UIC and or your Regional UIC and let them know your interest.

U.S Games

The joint tournament between USA Softball and USSSA for the promotion of JO Softball will be held in Oklahoma City at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium Complex on September 18th – 20th. The event will be the best 16U and 18U teams from each organization competing in their age groups. We will have both USA Softball Umpires and USSA Umpires attending the event. If you are qualified to call the upper level of 16U and 18U and are interested in being considered for this please contact your Regional Umpire-in-Chief. You will have to pay your way to OKC, and we will take care of the rest. If you are interested let us know.

Play: R1 on 2B, no outs and B4 at bat. During F1's delivery an illegal pitch is called.  B4 hits the ball to the F6 who, in the act of fielding the ball, is 'run over' by R1.  Interference is called by the base umpire. How does the umpire rule?

Ruling: JO Fast Pitch: R1 would be called out for interference and B4 put on 1B. Then the umpire should ask the offensive coach, do you want the result of the play, R1 out and B4 awarded 1B or R1 put back on 2B and a ball awarded to B4 Rule 8, Section 7J Rule 6A, Section 11B

Ruling: Adult Fast Pitch: R1 would be called out for interference and B4 put on 1B. Then the umpire should ask the offensive coach, do you want the result of the play, R1 out and B4 awarded 1B or R1 awarded 3B and a ball awarded to B4.

Rule 8, Section 7J Rule 6A, Section 11A

Play: In the bottom of the 2nd with R1 on 1B and 2 outs F1 throws a pitch to B4. In a) B4 swings and the PU calls a foul tip for strike three. The offensive coach calls time and asks the PU to go for help they thought it was a foul ball. In b) B4 swings and the PU calls a foul ball. The defensive coach calls time and asks the PU to go for help because they thought it was caught for a foul tip. How should the plate umpire rule?

Ruling: In a) PU called a foul tip and asks for help. BU says it was a foul ball. Runners would return to the base they started on at the time of the pitch. Foul ball and the batter remains at bat.

Rule 1, Definition Foul Ball.

In b) PU calls a foul ball and asks for help. BU says it was a foul tip. Since the PU killed the ball by calling it dead, runners would return to the base they started at on at the of the pitch. If the pitch was strike three and ruled a foul tip the batter would be called out for strike three.   Rule 1, Definition Foul Tip and Rule 7, Section 4E [3]
