Throughout the morning and afternoon, teams rotated between practicing, taking pictures and participating in a Q&A session with select members of the USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) — Monica Abbott, Ali Aguilar and Michelle Moultrie. The Opening Ceremony followed these activities and gave the teams the opportunity to be recognized on the field in the tournament’s “Olympic walk” while Abbott speak gave an exciting speech to open the Games.

In the evening, 18 of the 24 squads took to the diamond to showcase their talent while the other six teams will start their quest for the title Saturday morning. Eight teams remain undefeated by garnering a win on opening day including Region 1 Stripes, Region 2 Stars, Region 2 Stripes, Region 5 Eagles, Region 5 Stars, Region 5 Freedom, Region 9 Stripes and Region 10 Freedom.

Friday’s contests were dominated by offense as the participating athletes posted more than 65 hits and 40 runs combined. Region 5 Freedom Stripes proved to be a threat on offense as they defeated their opponent in run-rule fashion, 11-1, in the biggest win of the day.

The defense was just as impressive as the teams combined for over 55 strikeouts in roughly 43 innings pitched. Region 2 Stripes’ Lilly Young tacked on seven of those putouts as she led her team to a 6-0 shutout in the final game of Day One.

Pool play will continue on Saturday, August 13 with the first three contests commencing at 8 a.m. CT followed by 18 games spanning until 8 p.m. CT.
