2020 USA Softball JO Cup: Day Three Recap

Spartanburg, S.C. – Today’s action marked the beginning of the double elimination quest for the championship title at the 2020 USA Softball Junior Olympic (JO) Cup in all three of the competing divisions. The winner’s bracket was narrowed down to eight remaining teams per division while the loser’s bracket will now begin fighting to stay alive for a shot at the trophy.

Advancing undefeated in the 14-Under division winner’s bracket included Florida Impact 05 – Gatewood, Fury Platinum – Brown, Georgia Impact – Lewis, Lady Lightning Gold Futures, Mojo 2024 – Ross, Pro Impact Houston/McCool, Tampa Mustangs – Rene and Tampa Mustangs – Seymour.


In the 14U A bracket, Georgia Impact – Lewis picked up the largest win of the day, earning a 10-0, shutout win to advance in the bracket. In the 14U B bracket, Fury Platinum – Brown stayed alive with a pair of one-run wins, including a 1-0 shutout over Georgia Impact – Janney while a four-run sixth inning in their last contest of the day fueled them to a 6-5 win over East Cobb Bullets 14U – Maher. The Lady Lightning Gold Futures also picked up a pair of wins, theirs both via the run-rule as their bats continued to stay alive through the USA Softball JO Cup.
Advancing undefeated in the 16-Under division winner’s bracket play included Atlanta Vipers – Billings, Carolina Elite – Maddaluna, East Cobb Bullets, Gold Coast Hurricanes – Hammonds, Lady Gators – Jackson, Ohio Hawks – Lenos, Ohio Outlaws Premier - Schmieser and TN Mojo.


In the 16U A bracket, TN Mojo picked up the largest win of the day, earning a 12-0 (four innings) win in their second contest of the day behind a one-hit performance from Erna Carlin in the circle. TN Mojo had previously defeated Turnin2 in their first game of bracket play, 5-1. Also picking up a pair of wins in the 16U A bracket were Atlanta Vipers- Billings, Ohio Hawks – Lenos and Ohio Outlaws Premier - Schmieser.  In the 16U B bracket, Carolina Elite – Maddaluna, East Cobb Bullets and Lady Gators – Jackson each notched a pair of wins. For Carolina Elite, a 10-inning thriller against the GA Hotshots Premier kept them undefeated in bracket play in their final game of the day.


In the 18-Under division, 12 games were determined by a close margin of two or less runs while four contests were won in shutout fashion. Advancing with an undefeated record in the 18-Under division winner’s bracket was Indiana Fusion Elite 18U Pinkston, Carolina Cardinals – Chandler, PA Chaos Spina, GA Power Gold Roddy/Worley, LLG DPS Corn, Georgia Impact 2021-22 Ryman/Caldwell, Atlanta Vipers Trowell/Ray and Williamsburg Starz Gold Bunn.


In the 18-Under A bracket, Indiana Fusion Elite 18U picked up a pair of wins today, including a seventh inning walk-off thriller against the NC Challengers Premier – Renzi. Taryn Weddle and Jeanay Riley each went 2-for-3 at the plate with Riley securing the 3-2 win for the Fusion with an inside the park home run in the bottom of the seventh. In the 18-Under B bracket, Georgia Impact 2020-21 – Ryman/Caldwell recorded two wins including a 3-0 shutout over Hanover Lady Hornets and a 6-5 win over Gold Coast Hurricanes Cooper with Kam Caldwell going 4-for-7 on the day while driving in the winning run against the Hurricanes.
