Men's AA and Women's Open Day One Recap

Aug. 22, 2020, 11:58 p.m. (ET)

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – The rain may have delayed the start times, but it could not delay the action for long at the opening day of the 2020 USA Softball Men’s Class AA and Women’s Open Slow Pitch National Championships. Less than 24 hours after the crowning of the Men’s Super Slow Pitch National Champion, eight teams were on the hunt for the Men’s Class AA title while 18 squads duked it out in the Women’s Open division for a chance to earn their respective Championship trophy.

For the Men’s Class AA division, the competition was tight as only two games were decided via run-rule and a third of the games played today were determined by three runs or less. Despite the close games, 136 home runs were sent out of the park with Thunder/Chosen leading the pack with 26 home runs as a team.

Precision/Sonnys/H. Auto/Sprizzi/Bulldawg Trucking cruised into the Championship Game, which is slated for August 23 at 10 a.m. CT, after going undefeated through today’s action. Precision was tested, especially in their final two contests of the day as the team edged by their final two opponents by a combined four runs. In their first game of the day, Precision blew by Southern Monsta, 35-26, before posting a 13-12 win over MPT/Anarchy and a 27-24 win over Thunder/Chosen in the winner’s bracket finale.

For Thunder/Chosen, they now await MPT/Anarchy in tomorrow morning’s semifinal game, which will be played at 8:30 a.m. CT. Thunder/Chosen were undefeated until their meeting with Precision, capturing a 22-18 victory over Bad Draw/Rapid Fire/Easton and a 31-13 (six innings) win over Daddy Rocks/Hoffman/Ductech. MPT/Anarchy stayed alive in the loser’s bracket after dropping their second game of the day to Precision following a 23-1 (four innings) win over Bigger Den Me. An 11-6 win over Bad Draw/Rapid Fire/Easton setup the game against Daddy Rocks, which the team won 23-8 (six innings).

Advancing through the Women’s Open winner’s bracket with three wins a piece was Low Bobs/Shirts & Logos and Smash It Sports/Derby Girls/Sonnys/STG/Easton to secure their spot in the winner’s bracket finale with the winner advancing to the Championship Game slated for tomorrow at 11:30 CT. Low Bobs kicked off their first game of the day with a 12-3 victory over SNC/DBbrand followed with wins over On Point and Dirty Sports/Trojans/CS/Thunder. On the other side of the bracket, Smash It Sports edged past their first opponent of the day with a 9-7 win over Traders Reloaded Klutch before defeating Karma and Lady SNI/OA Labs/DeMarini/Louisville Slugger to advance to the winner’s bracket finale against Low Bobs.

With a trip to the Championship Game on the line, Smash It Sports wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Low Bobs responded in the top of the second frame with a run of their own, cutting the Smash It Sports lead to 2-1. Both offenses stayed quiet in the third and fourth innings before Smash It Sports added three runs to their lead to put them ahead 5-1 with six outs remaining in the game. Low Bobs threatened the Smash It Sports lead in the top of the seventh frame, tacking on two runs to put them within two but a pair of ground ball outs would end the rally with Smash It Sports securing the 5-3 victory to advance to the Women’s Open National Championship Game.

Staying alive in the loser’s bracket was Backman/Team 24 and Lady SNI/OA Labs/DeMarini/Louisville Slugger who are set to face-off in the 8:30am win-or-go-home game tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the semi-final contest against Low Bobs/Shirts & Logos. Backman recorded three back-to-back loser’s bracket wins after falling to Lady SNI, 11-5, in their second game of the day. Lady SNI recorded their first two wins of the day with no problem before being sent to the loser’s bracket with a 15-5 loss to Smash It Sports. Lady SNI responded to their loss with no hesitation, defeating BSC Dynasty, 16-12, to advance to Championship Sunday.
