August Blues Across America

Region 2 |

Umpires Dennis Barney and Scott Rosenberg pose with Jennie Finch and Commissioner Warren Jones, all from USA Softball of Ohio, prior to the final game of the Jennie Finch classic Tournament sponsored by Major League Baseball. Dennis is a 30-year USA Softball veteran, works NCAA softball and is the UIC for the Solon/Twinsburg area.  Scott is a 33-year softball veteran who also works high school softball and baseball.

Region 4 |

Doug Chittom, USA Softball of Mississippi, lives in Booneville, MS and for 10 years works USA Softball all over the Northern part of Mississippi. Doug is the President of the local umpire association for the past 8 years and takes a very active role in training the new umpires that comes into the association. Doug is accomplished in working many Championship events for USA Softball in Mississippi and has worked three National Championships for USA Softball.


Region 6 |

Mike Golini has been an umpire with USA Softball of Indiana since 1993 and has been a state staff member who has helped as an instructor at many state clinics and schools.  He has been an umpire, umpire coordinator, and Umpire-in-Chief for many national championship events.  Prior to becoming an umpire, Mike played and coached in USA Softball for ten years.  Mike is married to his wife Anna who fully supports his passion for umpiring and teaching his colleagues.

 

  Region 6 |

Dan Phillips recently retired as an active umpire and the District 21 Umpire in Chief of USA Softball of Michigan.  In Dan’s twenty-five career, he umpired in 7 Men’s Fast Pitch and one JO National Championships including most recently the 2019 Men’s Open East Fast Pitch National  in Rockford, MI.  Dan took great pride in getting better everytime he walked on the field.  While being home for the Covid-19 outbreak, Dan realized how much he enjoyed being able to spend quality time with his family.  Dan will be missed by his umpire family, but will plenty of time for him to spend with his wife, kids, and grandkids.  To Dan’s family, Thank you for letting us have the great times and memories with Dan over the years.  Dan and his wife Marybeth reside in Harbor Springs, MI.

 

Region 10 |

USA Softball of Central California regrets to announce the passing of  Rainer “Wink” Winckelmann.  Long time umpire for more than 40 years Wink passed away at his home on May 10.   He was 69 years old.  Friends and family simply always have known him as Wink.  He was USA Softball of Central California Deputy Umpire-in-Chief for the past 14 years.  He worked 8 National Tournaments as an Umpire or Assistant UIC, was a member of the National Indicator Fraternity and a Gold Level Medals Awardee. Wink was a dedicated umpire with exemplary on/off the field professionalism, enjoyed training aspiring young umpires, and provided exceptional leadership as the Association Deputy UIC.  Commissioner Tom Dowd commented that “Wink was always available for anything and everything you needed him to do”.  Wink loved umpiring and just was a passion of his.  Wink was a superb umpire, friend and devoted family member. He will be missed by friends and umpires who had the pleasure of crossing paths with Wink.
