May | Letter from USA Softball President John Gouveia

June 01, 2018, 5:09 p.m. (ET)
Memorial Day weekend is the traditional beginning of summer, and that means things are also starting to heat up on the softball diamond. Even the coldest sections of the country are thawing out and teams are moving outdoors to play our great game. But let us also not forget those who give us the freedom to enjoy our leisure time, which we all too often take for granted. On Memorial Day, I hope everyone took the time to remember and honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces and protecting our freedom, even if just for a moment. We would not be able to pursue our passions otherwise.

The start of summer means something else as well, the beginning of USA Softball Championship season! Teams are already out there qualifying for a spot in one of our National Championships. The best-of-the-best play USA Softball, and I look forward to watching and/or hearing about the great Championship Play that will happen around the country. Keep inspiring those in your community to get out and get active on the diamond – softball is the sport for everyone, from recreational to competitive.

Along with Championship season, our National Teams will be in action, including at both the Junior Men's and Women's World Championships, to be held in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Chiba, Japan, respectively, this coming July and August. The Junior Men got off to a great start by winning the Fargo Memorial Tournament title and look to be very competitive. And we all know that our Women's team is ranked number one in the world for a reason.

It’s a great time to be a part of USA Softball. We’ve got an exciting lineup this summer, and offer several opportunities for athletes, umpires, coaches, and fans to be involved in our great game! Wherever you are – travel safe, play hard and most of all, have fun. See you at the ballpark.
