JO Cup- Day One in Five Pictures

July 23, 2018, 10:02 p.m. (ET)

Pool play began today at the 2018 Junior Olympic Cup!

Relive some of the best storylines of the day in five photos.

GA Academy- 18U

Strong defense defined many of the day's games-- more than 20 of Monday's matchups were won by two or fewer runs.

Rock Gold- Waye- 18U

Focused fielding kept hard hits from becoming extra bases-- twice the amount of singles were hit on day one of pool play than were doubles and triples.

Gold Coast Hurricanes- Hammonds- 14U

Pitchers came out determined to keep balls in the park-- only 16 homeruns were hit by the 87 competing teams during day one of pool play.

Texas Glory- Adkins- 16U

With the ball staying inside the park, teams needed to score runs. Runners' work on the bases shined-- over 150 bases were stolen today throughout all three divisions.

Williamsburg Starz- 18U

Teamwork helped competitors produce wins-- out of the 27 undefeated teams of the day, more than half allowed three or fewer runs in their wins, a combination of great pitching and team defense.
