PLANO, Texas—The record high temperatures didn’t stop Championship Saturday as Rock Gold- Waye (18-Under) and Texas Glory- Naudin (16-Under) took home the 2018 USA Softball Division GOLD National Championships in Plano, Texas.

“This has definitely been a test”, coach of 2018 USA Softball GOLD National Champions Rick Waye (Rock Gold-Waye 18-Under) notes. “We decided about Father’s Day weekend that this was our lineup, built around our great pitching, and we were going to go with it. The heat was a test, the games were a test, but what a great feeling it is to be on top.”

The 16-Under division Championship game saw undefeated Texas Glory-Naudin 16U bring home the national championship to the state of Texas, beating Santa Fe Inferno- Lovett, 8-1. Glory was boosted by a five-run fifth inning, including a two-run homerun from Savanna DesRochers and a triple from Lauren Lucas. Taylor Snow pitched for Glory, striking out three and allowing only five hits in her complete game outing. Santa Fe Inferno’s lone run came off a sacrifice fly from Nyah Morgan in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Rock Gold-Waye took home the 18-Under division title in exciting style, fighting their way through the loser’s bracket. Gold won three straight games, including the first championship matchup to force a championship “if” game against then-undefeated Team GA Henning. In their first game of the night, Team GA Henning started off the scoring with a hard ground ball single from Cassie Henning, scoring Kelly Paulson, who walked in her first at-bat. Rock Gold came back the bottom of the second inning off a solo homerun from Abby Warner, followed by a run walked-in in the bottom of the fourth. Gold scored once more off a single in the bottom of the sixth from Emma Ritter, holding Henning to only three hits throughout the game in the 4-1 defeat.

The second game brought the same amount of excitement as the first, with Rock Gold earning the first run of the game in their first time through the lineup. In the top of the first, Zoey Jones hit a double, sending in Breanna Byrant to take the lead 1-0. Henning bounced back with a solo homerun from their leadoff hitter Amanda Brisken, but were silent for the rest of the night thanks to shutout pitching from Rock Gold’s Ashley Worrell. Henning fell to Rock Gold 4-1 for the second straight game, earning the runner-up title in the 2018 GOLD National Championships with an 8-2 overall record.
