July 21, 2018, 1:02 a.m. (ET)

PLANO, Texas— The heat and hot offensive play was present once again at day five of the 2018 USA Softball GOLD Nationals in Plano, Texas. The long ball was the star of the day as 40 homeruns were hit in total during the day’s 39 games.

“We lost to the Ohio Hawks on five solo homeruns today, so it’s definitely been flying out of here,” notes 2017 GOLD Nationals Championship coach Josh Johnson of the Virginia Unity 18U. “The hitting of these teams today is really catching up to the pitching talent we’ve seen all week. We have had a big ones (homeruns) all throughout the tournament, even one to walk off on during pool play. Homeruns have definitely helped us win games, but also determined our fate in losses.”

The 18-Under division saw 19 homeruns throughout the day, starting off with KC Gold’s two homeruns in a win over Fort Worth Batbusters 18U Gold, 6-3. MS Elite Gold followed with their own offensive splash, outscoring Team TFS STX 10-2 in their morning battle.  The fans at GOLD Nationals saw more long balls in the afternoon, with a homerun in Rock Gold’s 8-2 defeat of the LA Blazers, and two more from KC Gold in their afternoon 10-2 route of the Lady Gators. In their final game of the night for the division, KC Gold shutout defending champion Virginia Unity 9-0 with a three-run long ball hit in the bottom of the sixth to end the ballgame. After today’s play, Team GA Henning, Ohio Hawks, Rock Gold- Wayne, MS Elite Gold, Firecrackers, and KC Gold remain in the quest for the 2018 USA Softball 18-Under Division National Championship.

Playing fewer games than their counterpart, the 16-Under division saw 21 homeruns hit in their games throughout Saturday. Texas Glory Naudin put on a show with three homeruns and a grand slam in their 13-1 route of American Freedom South Tovar. Centex Buzz 16U Gold followed the morning’s long ball trend and hit two of their own as they took down Mo So Cal Athletics 12-5. In the evening’s penultimate game, the 16U Bombers broke up a 6-6 tie with a two-run homerun, and a three-run bottom of the sixth inning, to beat Glory Atkins 16U, 9-6. The final game of the night brought the same excitement, as Texas Glory Blue walked off in the bottom of the 7th, beating American Freedom South Tovar 6-5.  Santa Fe Inferno Lovett, Texas Glory Naudin, Tennessee Ballhawks, Southern Force Martin, 16U Bombers, and Texas Glory Blue will play Saturday for the 2018 USA 16-under Division Softball GOLD National Championship.
