Two no-hit performances from the circle, plus a .500 batting average earned Texas A&M senior pitcher Mel Dumezich (Whiting, Ind.) this week’s USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced today.

Dumezich registered a 4-0 record in the circle this week and helped the Aggies get off to a program-best 17-0 start. The senior totaled 22 strikeouts, issued just one walk and gave up no earned runs during the weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational. She tallied a 0.00 ERA in 25.0 innings pitched.

“I’m honored to be named Player of the Week,” said Dumezich.“Our team is off to a great start this year and we’re excited to keep it going. I credit my team and coaches with my success this week. I couldn’t do what I love to do without them.”

Dumezich also threw her career-first no-hitter vs. Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 20 and added a second no-hitter vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 24.

“I think the award for Mel is well-deserved,” said Texas A&M Head Coach Jo Evans. “She did it all. She hit great and really came through for us in clutch situations. On the mound she was basically flawless. It’s well-deserved and Mel has taken a great leadership role for us. I think her play is inspirational to our whole team.”

At the plate, Dumezich also performed for the Aggies posting a .500 (9-for-18) batting average with a home run, nine hits, seven RBI, five doubles, five runs and earned two base on balls.

Dumezich was also named the SEC Player of the Week for her efforts. This also marks the first time an Aggie student-athlete has received the National Player of the Week honor since Megan Gibson earned the award on March 4, 2008.

No. 5 Texas A&M (17-0) cracked the Top 5 for the first time this season after their flawless week in College Station, Texas. The Aggies collected a pair of wins against Stephen F. Austin, 3-0 and 8-0, and topped UTSA 8-0 (five innings) and 6-4, Purdue 5-1 and 6-1 before closing out the Texas A&M Invitational with a 8-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana. The last time the Aggies were ranked in the Top 5 was the Final Poll of the 2008 season.

Up next, Dumezich and the Aggies will host Sam Houston State on Wednesday, Feb. 27 before heading to the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla. over the weekend.
