Nov. 17, 2007, 11:46 a.m. (ET)

YOKOHAMA, Japan – The United States Women’s National Team extended its record to 2-0 at the Japan cup on day two with a 5-1 win over Australia. The team trailed one run in the fourth but they responded big in the bottom half with five runs scored, highlighted by a Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) triple.

Against Australia, no runs were posted until the fourth inning when Australia struck first in the top of the fourth. Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.) took over in the circle in the fourth after Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.) threw three innings allowing only one hit. Kylie Cronk singled to lead off the inning and would score the only run of the game for Australia when Natalie Ward reached first on an error by Vicky Galindo (Union City, Calif.) at second.

Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) singled to start off the fourth inning with Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, Calif.) coming in to pinch run. A double by Tairia Flowers (Tucson, Ariz.) and a walk issued to Jenny Topping (Whittier, Calif.) loaded the bases. A fielders choice by Galindo put Lappin out at home but Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) reached on an error by shortstop to put the game at 1-1. Lowe came through with a triple to give the team a good 4-1 lead. Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) added an insurance run that would plate Lowe and secure a 5-1 win for the red, white and blue.

The team will next compete in the medal rounds tomorrow morning starting at 10:00 a.m./local time.
