Eastlake Skating Center, Warsaw, Indiana, recently donated several pairs of roller skates, inline skates, helmets and pads to House of Hope in the Dominican Republic. 2nd Mile Missions, a local non-profit focused on helping women and children in the Dominican transported the items to their House of Hope, a school and housing facility for young girls and teens.

“I couldn’t get many pictures because I spent most of my time holding one of the girls up as they learned to skate,” said Sue Vercateren, Director of Operations.

“This was the first time any of them have ever tried skating, they had so much fun,” she added. “We waited until school was closed before we could skate, and it was dark by then, but you see their smiling faces.”

Trace Hansen, owner of Eastlake Skating Center and other rinks, stated anytime he can spread the pure joy and fun of skating with those less fortunate, he jumps at the opportunity. “To know these young ladies have had to struggle, and will have a struggle ahead of them as they  grow in education, it’s amazing to see their joyful spirit.” He adds, “knowing they have never experienced this activity, embraced the opportunity and had so much fun is very comforting and rewarding.”
