Asiago/Roana 2016: surprising finalists!

June 17, 2016, 1:27 p.m. (ET)

*Regarding the Women (end of article):  The last game decides the opponents of the Canadians: surprisingly, the United States beat the Czech Republic with a final 4-0 result: the US not satisfied even the already comfortable 3-0, continue to press and their offensive found response in the fourth goal which leaves empty-handed the Czech. Great enthusiasm in the American bench that makes their return after the silver medal in 2012.

Note:  The Women’s Team Coach, Chalie Sgrillo emailed us The game time today has been moved to 7:00 pm, 1:00 pm EST.

The penultimate day of the 2016 FIRS World Championships in Asiago/Roana first decide the fifth to eighth positions of the teams that lost the quarterfinals yesterday.
France and Canada defeated yesterday respectively by Italy and Spain in the Junior men category, start in the Hodegart Arena. The French are good at managing the game from the start and to dictate the pace, as well as to exploit the penalties of the opponents. Although Canada ties at the 37’ minute, it is another power play for Les Bleus that close the game 4-3 in their favor.

Sweden Under-20 overwhelms the United States 6-4 with an impressive comeback from an initial default of 2-0. The game seemed to be easy for the Americans, but the Scandinavians brought out their Vikings origins and first recover then win 5-2 on the USA.

Italy is engaged in both categories against Spain; first for the Senior Women (5-8th place) in which the Iberian have a rather easy success especially thanks to a double numerical superiority that they get advantage of as it is written in the books.

Later, it is time for the first Junior Men semifinal of the day. Coach Sartori’s players interrupt the positive wake of victories of Coach Boutreault’s boys by beating them 5-3 in an intense match with the constant twists. The first JM semifinal gets exciting at the very start with the first of three goals of Alessio Lettera. The Iberian tie first in even strength then score the second goal with a beautiful offensive action in power play. On the 3-2 Italy puts on the turbo and extends with two fast goals and then holds the Spanish affront 5 players against 3, saw the penalty killing. At the final whistle the scoreboard 5-3 marks; the hosting team qualifies for the finals.

In the second Junior men semi-final we are witnessing a Czech Republic who have had so much trouble just in the very first match against Slovenia: they conclude the first twenty minutes against Switzerland leading by one goal, 2-1. The Swiss are tough and they fight for every puck until the last second, but the excellent game, the heart and will are not enough against the Czech Republic who wins with a concluding 3-1 and gets in the finals.

As for the female Senior semifinals, the evening has in program two great matches: France against Canada and the Czech Republic against the USA. In the first game, both teams really struggle for the control of the puck, the French are impetuous, however, they manage to defend well in inferiority. The first Canadian goal in fact happens only at the eleventh minute when the disk slips between the pads of the goalie while the second goal is the result of a more composed teamwork. At the final whistle, Canada gains access to the final.

The last game decides the opponents of the Canadians: surprisingly, the United States beat the Czech Republic with a final 4-0 result: the US not satisfied even the already comfortable 3-0, continue to press and their offensive found response in the fourth goal which leaves empty-handed the Czech. Great enthusiasm in the American bench that makes their return after the silver medal in 2012.
