Jessica Oates - March 2013 USARS Roller Derby Spotlight

Jessica OatesJessica Oates, AKA "Bonecrusher" #116, is featured as the USARS Derby Spotlight athlete for March.  Jessica is a member of the Bakersfield Rollergirls. She not only works on her own game, but she sees potential in all of her teammates and will stop to give advice when she sees something specific that can be fixed to get a better result.  Bonecrusher stresses that "Teamwork makes the Dreamwork!"  
Jessica also coaches the Bakersfield Junior Roller Derby league, which is going on their 3rd year together.  The juniors look up to her and strive to be an adult skater like her when they turn 18.  She gives more than 100% at everything she does and keeps going no matter what obstacles come her way.  

Hometown: I was born and raised in Bakersfield California.

Career goals: I would love to be a Flight Nurse for the Los Angeles County Fire Department!

Current league: I help coach Bakersfield Junior Roller Derby and  I skate for Bakersfield Rollergirls, Team CRUZ and The Rejects.

Years involved in derby: I started playing and obsessing over Roller Derby in October of 2006

Coaches name: My Coach’s name is Gary Maxwell.

Favorite derby position (blocker, pivot, jammer): I love to play, put me in wherever you want me!

When did you begin skating: I start skating around age 7.

Fondest memory of skating: My husband proposed to me in the center of the track at one of BRG’s first home bouts. It was so awesome!

Future goals you hope to obtain as a skater: My derby dream as a coach is to take BjRD to the junior Olympics. My derby dream a skater is to play w some great skaters and continue to grow and learn every season. I would love to play in a few big time advanced skilled tourneys. That would be a cherry on top!

Other sports you currently participate in: There are other sports besides roller Derby?

Who is your favorite sports figure: Joy Collision!

Who is the person you most admire/greatest influence in your life and why: My folks, they gave me the tools to get where I am today. It is a pretty good place.

List your hobbies: My hobbies outside of roller derby are going to concerts with my fine husband and anything I can do with my family to stay active and healthy. 

What music do you listen to during training or competition? All music is good loud. 

What makes you a unique and special person: That is not for me to answer.

Favorite food before a competition: I eat everything!

Favorite movie: My favorite movie is the Outsiders, based on the book by S E Hinton. I love that movie.

Most prized possession: My most prized possessions are my dudes, as far as my stuffs? My SKATES!
