2021 UIPM World Championships Day 1 Recap

June 09, 2021, 10:05 p.m. (ET)

Day 1 of the 2021 Pentathlon World Championships started today with the women’s relay. Samantha Schultz and Claire Green paired up for Team USA in the women’s relay.
Swimming was the first event of the day and Team USA was swimming out of heat 1 lane 2. Schultz was first in the water and got off to a quick start. She put the team in 3rd place as Green dove in for her 100. She had a strong first 50 and brought it home to finish in 4th place for the heat. Their time of 2:15.8 put them in 9th place overall.
Fencing was the next event. Both had some great hits including getting all 4 hits against the host country of Egypt. Their total score of 160 put them in 11th place for the event.
Up next was the bonus round. GER was their first opponent and Schultz made a great attack to get the victory. Green was up and she too made an attack to score the victory, defeating GER 2-0. MEX was the next opponent and Green started things off and was unable to get the victory. Schultz missed an opportunity and lost her touch. Team USA was able to walk away from the bonus round with 1 bonus point.
After two events, Team USA was in 11th place. They drew some good, but tricky horses. Warmup up went great, but Schultz was the first rider in and had some difficulty with jump number four. She tried to correct things but was unable to and ended up with four refusals, which is an elimination.
Before the laser run, Team USA was sitting in 11th place. Schultz got things started with a 9-second shoot on the first series and was able to close the gap on some competitors. Green took over for the second half and had a great run, also shooting her best average this season. Green ran down a team to cross the line in 10th place overall.
This was a good top 10 performance for Schultz and Green as they now look towards the women’s semi-final on day 3.
Tomorrow is the men’s relay where Amro Elgeziry and Tyler Evans will team up to represent the USA. Be sure to check www.usapentathlon.org to follow the team.
