July 15, 2021, 6:46 p.m. (ET)

Day 1- Mens' Relay

Team USA started the Junior World Championships in Alexandria, Egypt with a men's relay. Jake St. Clair (16 y.o.) and Daniel Crowley (19 y.o.) represented Team USA. Our young athletes competed really well against the world's best Juniors (U22).

Swimming

The swimming event was held at a beautiful 25-meter pool of the Arab Academy for Science Technology & Maritime Transport. Jake and Daniel swam good times on the 2 x 100 relay. Jake is a good swimmer who trains with the Rose Bowl Aquatics. He started our relay with 59.0 sec over the first 100. Daniel did his best time of 1:14.

Fencing

Jake surprised many experienced fencers by winning 4 bouts out of 5 at the beginning of the competition. Jake was attacking much older opponents without any hesitation. He won fencing bouts against experienced fencers, including athletes from Russia, Belarus, Egypt and others. Daniel had a harder day during the round-robin, but he did an amazing job in a fencing bonus round. In fact, Jake and Daniel won against three teams. Only two other teams had three victories in the bonus round.

Riding

After a short break, our athletes continued competition with the riding event. Both Jake and Daniel are good riders. They didn't have any problem handling horses during the warm-up and competition. Jake and Daniel finished riding without mistake, having only a 16 sec time penalty. In fact, no team was able to avoid the time penalty. Our team moved to 16th place after riding.

Laser Run

Jake and Daniel had a good laser run event. They were able to maintain their place in tough competition with elite Junior teams from all over the world. This was their first international competition in the U22 division against older athletes. Both our athletes had invaluable experience to compete on the world stage. It will boost their confidence for future international events.
