San Luis Obispo, CA -In the Youth Competition held at Cal Poly SLO, athletes compete in the swim, fence and laser-run with National Team berths on the line. In a very close and exciting competition which literally came down to the last few strides of the laser run, Caroline Orcutt of Fort Walton Beach, Florida pulled out the victory with a total score of 857 points for the four events. Only two points back, Lauren McCutchen of San Antonio, Texas took second with 855 points. Rounding out the medalists, Katherine Law of Atlanta, Georgia finished third with 823 points while Jenna Kelly of Denver, Colorado took fourth with 817 points.
In the first event, Alyona Beams who took 3rd in the senior swim, won the youth swim. Rounding out the top three youth swimmers was Katherine Law (2nd) and Caroline Orcutt (3rd). In the second event of the day, Lauren McCutchen surged to the top of the youth standings winning the fencing event with 241 points. Winner of the first Youth selection competition in December, Jenna Kelly took second in the fencing event while Sanojah Gilkes of Barbados earned third place.
Starting quickly, Orcutt raced to a lead of the laser-run four lap 800-meter course. Needing to get five shots on her laser target before each 800-meter lap, Orcutt traded the lead with McCutchen before a blazing last lap gave her the overall victory. Her time of 14:55 was first in the laser run by almost 20 seconds. McCutchen finished second in the laser run with a time of 15:14 while Law took third with 15:40. Orcutt and Kelly now top the USA Pentathlon Youth ranking list with regional and national championships to go before the Youth National Team will be selected this summer.
