St. Petersburg, FL – Even before the Opening Ceremonies began, Team USA struck gold in the feature race of the day, the Senior Division Biathle Mixed Relay event of the 2019 UIPM Biathle/ Triathle World Championship.
Olympians and U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) members SGT Amro ElGeziry and SPC Samantha Achterberg won the gold medal for Team USA in the mixed relay event. The Americans led from start to finish capturing the prize event.
Athletes from 33 countries are in St. Petersburg competing in the Union International of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) World Championship. Several Olympians are present along with numerous hopefuls for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The competition was opened by 1976 Olympic Games Champion and UIPM Executive Board Member for Sport Janusz Peciak after a welcome from City of St. Petersburg's Tony Leno and Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater's Jeffrey John.
Janusz Peciak said: “I warmly welcome all participants to the UIPM 2019 Biathle/Triathle World Championships and it was wonderful to see such a high standard of competition today. We are delighted to be here in St Petersburg, Florida, for a competition that is very important to the development of UIPM Sports in all communities and countries around the world.”
A special thank you was given to Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater's Caleb Petersen for the hard work that he put in as well as to the St. Petersburg High School band led by Katheryn Aucremann who performed during the event.
The competition continues throughout the weekend with the Triathle Mixed Relay on Friday, the individual and team Triathle on Saturday and the individual and team Biathle on Sunday. All are invited to come out and watch as the event is being held at Albert Whitted Park in downtown St. Petersburg.
