UIPM 70th Anniversary Congress

Limassol, Cyprus -Delegates from across the global pentathlon community gathered in Cyprus for the 70th Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) Congress.

Last month’s Congress – the last before the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – included a gala dinner marking the 70th anniversary of the UIPM, which was formed during the 1948 Olympic Games in London (GBR).The anniversary dinner honoring the best athletes, coaches and events for 2018, included a host of invited dignitaries including UIPM Patron HM King Constantine of Greece, UIPM Honorary President, Prince Albert II of Monaco and Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, recent President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and was broadcast via television and internet world wide.

This special event, overseen by UIPM President, Dr. Klaus Schormann featured the UIPM 2018 Annual Awards and took place after the first of two days of the Congress, attended this year by more than 80 nations. Now a biannual event, the UIPM Congress gives National Federation delegates the opportunity to vote on a range of motions proposed by themselves and by the UIPM Executive Board (EB).

The USA is represented on the UIPM executive board by John Helmick serving as treasurer and who is notably the son of former USOC President and IOC Vice President, Robert Helmick and Rob Stull, who serves as NORCECA Confederation President. Of note is Janusz Peciak, the 1976 Olympic Champion from Poland who was the head coach for Team USA for many years and now is the UIPM executive board member for sport.
