Mickey Kelly Competes in World Cup Final

May 25, 2012, 11:45 a.m. (ET)

U.S. Army Captain Mickey Kelly (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is one step closer to her Olympic dream by qualifying for the World Cup Final of women's pentathlon to be held Saturday, May 26, in Chengdu, China. The World Cup Final is the last big event before the 2012 Olympic Games. Athletes have traveled the World Cup circuit from the USA, Brazil, Hungary and Russia to gain enough valuable World Cup Series points to be one of the 36 athletes who have the honor to line up this weekend at the world famous Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre which was custom built for the 2010 Modern Pentathlon World Championships.

The World Cup Final takes on additional significance this year as it is the last opportunity for athletes to gain world ranking points needed to gain qualification for the Modern Pentathlon event (Aug. 11-12) at the London Olympic Games.

Kelly turned in the world's fastest combined time of the recent World Championships held in Rome, Italy, running the 3,000-meter course and shooting 15 targets in 11:20, easily allowing the Iraq war veteran to move into the finals of this weekend's Olympic qualifying event. Since the Beijing Games of 2008, in which Kelly qualified but was unable to participate, she has returned to world-class form after serving her country while on assignment in Iraq and perhaps even more astounding, giving birth to daughter Lily only five months ago.

The UIPM will be broadcasting the entire event live on Pentathlon TV at

Competition Schedule:
