BORDEAUX, FRANCE.  The Youth A French Open Championships were held in Bordeaux, France on May 16 and 17, 2009.   The United States reigning Youth A and NORCECA champions, Nathan Schrimsher, 16 and Lucas Schrimsher, 15 were invited to participate as the United States Youth A delegation.   The Schrimsher brothers bid farewell to their Roswell pentathlon coach, Jan Olesinski, and embarked on their first journey to France.

Upon arrival, the French delegation warmly greeted the American team and introduced them to the field of competition.  The competition welcomed top Youth A athletes representing France, Portugal, Poland, Spain and Italy.

The first day of competition stared with an impressive swim by both boys.  Lucas swam the 200 meters in 2:07 and Nathan 2:08, which set them into the top ten of the overall field of athletes.  Next event was the fencing competition in which the French athletics enjoy a particularly esteemed repute throughout Europe.  Even still, Lucas fought his way through the competition scoring 1000 pentathlon points and was ranked fourth overall at the end of day one. Nathan scored 784 pentathlon points and at the end of the day ranked 23 overall.

Day two of the competition opened up the new and exciting format of the run/ shoot event.   Nathan entered the heat in the 3rd position.  A perfect shoot the first round rapidly helped him to run/shoot his way up the later to come in second place in the heat, and in the end, 15 place overall.

Lucas started the number one heat positioned 4th.  By the end of the first round of shooting, he led the competition out of the shooting booth and briefly held the first place position overall.   By the end of the event, fifteen-year-old Lucas placed 12 overall with 4360 pentathlon total points.    Nathan scored 4300 total points.

The top fifteen positions in the field of competition were tightly grouped with a small point spread. The French Open Championships showcased a very competitive field of elite athletics giving it all they had.  The results of the competition can be viewed by clicking HERE to go the event results page.  To view a photo gallery of the event please click HERE.
