LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The USA Luge off-season recruiting tour is well underway, and has announced three stops in the mid-west in June.

Known as the White Castle USA Luge Slider Search, national team coaches incorporate sleds on wheels and travel the nation each summer and fall looking for future Olympic athletes in the sport. The public is encouraged to attend the event which will give boys and girls, ages 9-13, an opportunity to learn luge and qualify to join the USA Luge Junior National Development team.

The Slider Search comes to Minneapolis June 15-16; Chicago/Westmont June 22-23; and Appleton, Wis. June 29-30.

Specific sites are as follows:

Minneapolis - Ramp from West Parkway to Franklin Ave on North side

Chicago/Westmont - Cass Avenue and Dallas Street, Westmont

Appleton - East Broadway Drive between North Ballard Road and Thornapple Lane

The spring Slider Search circuit began with three stops in May, including White Castle’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio, followed by Palo Alto, Calif. and Camano Island, Wash.

At each event, there are two clinics daily, from 9 AM - 12 PM and 2 - 5 PM. Participants only need to attend one session. All clinics are free of charge and each participant will be given a complimentary White Castle USA Luge Slider Search T-shirt.

Children selected will be invited to learn the sport on ice next winter in either Lake Placid, N.Y., host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, or Park City, Utah, the 2002 Olympic luge site.

Over 250,000 youngsters have been introduced to luge in this program since its inception over 30 years ago.

An Olympic sport since 1964, luge consists of athletes sliding down a track of ice on sleds at speeds approaching 90 miles per hour. The White Castle USA Luge Slider Search clinics will have kids luging at much slower, more introductory speeds on wheeled luge sleds. Participating “sliders” (a name given to luge athletes) will ultimately be considered for the USA Luge Junior Development Team. The coaches guiding each clinic include National and Olympic team athletes, giving each young participant professional instruction and inspiration.
