Junior Luge World Cup comes to Utah Olympic Park

PARK CITY, Utah – The Utah Olympic Park (UOP) in Park City will host the future of luge when the Junior World Cup tour opens its season Dec. 5-8.

The UOP was the site of the sliding sports competitions during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and a venue being eyed as part of a possible future Salt Lake City Olympic bid. USA Luge captured Olympic silver and bronze medals at those Games.

The Junior Luge World Cup is the sport’s developmental circuit for athletes to the age of 20. Two sets of races, over the four days, will be contested in the Wasatch.

USA Luge will bring a number of seasoned junior athletes, including Ashley Farquharson who hails from Park City and calls the UOP her home track. Farquharson’s former junior teammate, Brittney Arndt, also from Park City, has graduated to the national team and is currently racing in the World Cup. The United States juniors have spent several weeks this fall training on the high-speed, 15-turn track.

Each American athlete has had approximately 270 training runs to date going back to October, with 60 of them per athlete coming in Park City.

“They’re handling the track nicely and I am optimistic that it will show during International Training Week and the Junior World Cup,” said new junior national team head coach Robert Fegg, assisted by Larry Dolan. “The team has handled the (coaching) change very well, and good steps have been taken in the right direction. Next week we will see how far. As I always say there are no miracles. Every change takes time, but our team has made a great effort to initiate the change.”

Fegg is a former German national team member and World Championship medalist, who spent many years coaching Canada and Korea. Larry Dolan was a member of the 1998 USA Luge Olympic Team and had most recently coached the U.S. candidate team.

Daily training runs will begin Thursday (Nov. 29), leading up to race days. Action gets underway each morning at 9:00 MT.

Racing commences Wednesday, Dec. 5 with youth men, women and doubles, as well as junior doubles, featuring the team of Dana Kellogg, of Chesterfield, Mass. and Duncan Segger, of Lake Placid, N.Y.

The new discipline of women’s doubles, to be included in the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, will be included in Park City. The U.S. will enter Maya Chan, of Chicago, and Reannyn Weiler, of Whitesboro, N.Y.

A complete list of USA Luge juniors can be found at: https://www.teamusa.org/usa-luge/junior-team.

The Dec. 6 schedule finds junior races in men and women, as well as a team competition.

On Dec. 7, youth men, women and doubles, junior doubles and women’s doubles will return to the UOP ice for their second event.

The second junior races will occur Dec. 8 in men and women along with the team competition.
