CALGARY, Alberta –USA Luge has opened the Junior World Cup season with three consecutive bronze medals in the team competition. The most recent occurred last Friday in Calgary, and followed two bronze medals earlier this month in Park City, Utah.

Ashley Farquharson, of Park City; Sean Hollander, of Lake Placid; and the doubles team of Dana Kellogg, of Chesterfield, Mass., and Duncan Segger, also of Lake Placid, got the job done. The U.S. federation is in third place on the season in this Junior World Cup discipline.

The U.S. group had a total time of 2 minutes, 13.818 seconds. Teams from Germany and Russia placed 1-2, respectively.

Hollander was 10th in junior men’s singles; Keaton Jens, of St. Charles, Ill., was 12th; and Zachary Digregorio, of Medway, Mass., 13th.

Farquharson took 15th in the women’s Junior World Cup event; Chevonne Forgan, of Chelmsford, Mass. was 20th, and Sophie Kirkby, of Ray Brook, N.Y., 25th. Farquharson is in eighth place overall.

Kellogg and Segger placed seventh in the junior doubles race. They are tied for fifth place on the season.

USA Luge showed its depth in youth men with three athletes scoring top 13 results, led by Ian Smith, of Carlisle, Mass., in fifth place. He used a strong second leg to improve from seventh.

Smith has not been out of the top five in the first three events of the season. He was followed by Michael O’Gara, of La Crescenta, Calif., in 10th, and Sam Eckert, of Wilmington, N.Y., 13th. All three and Matt Greiner, of Park City, are in the top 10 of the overall youth World Cup rankings with Smith currently in third place on the season.

After a few days of sliding in Lake Placid this week, the youngsters will head home for the holidays.

The Junior World Cup resumes in mid-January in tony St. Moritz, Switzerland, site of the 2020 Youth Olympic Games.
