USA Judo 2020 Youth Nationals Postponed

March 13, 2020

In response to the growing concern over the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and, in consideration of the safety of its members, USA Judo has decided to POSTPONE the 2020 Youth National Championships originally scheduled to take place March 28-29, 2020. The new, re-scheduled dates of the 2020 USA Judo Youth National Championships are August 29-30, 2020, also in to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation like everyone else around the world for the last several weeks and, after continual communications with medical staff and other officials, we’ve determined that this is the best course of action for USA Judo in keeping its members safe and doing its part in reducing further transmission of the virus through a large group gathering and travel from throughout the United States. USA Judo has been working on the logistics to re-schedule Youth Nationals all week, but wanted to inform our members of the postponement yesterday following the decision of Utah Governor, Gary Herbert, to place a limit on mass gatherings statewide to 100 people in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus (https://www.sltrib.com/news/2020/03/12/coronavirus-spreads-utah/). This is an unprecedented situation and we feel badly for the athletes, coaches and family members and sponsors who have been planning and preparing for the Youth Nationals and any expense lost in association with re-scheduling and/or cancelling their plans. We hope everyone understands that USA Judo will always consider the safety of its members as its top priority. We are grateful to the Utah Sports Commission, Visit Salt Lake, the Salt Palace and the Hilton Salt Lake City Center for their flexibility and cooperation in helping us re-schedule this important event.

Here are answers to anticipated common questions and concerns:

•   Will I receive a refund on my 2020 USA Judo Youth Nationals Registration Fee?

All current event registrations will stay active. The next online deadline will be extended to August 18, 2020. USA Judo’s Refund Policy has always been that there are no refunds, but credit may be applied for future USA Judo National Events within one year’s time. Exceptions to this policy are applied with documented injuries or bereavement situations. Given the unprecedented nature of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, USA Judo will honor the registration payment credit to be applied to another USA Judo National Event through April 1, 2021. Please contact USA Judo’s Corinne Shigemoto (corinne.shigemoto@usajudo.us / 719-201-6176) or Austin Leath (austin.leath@usajudo.us / 719-866-3621) with how you would like to apply your credit.

•   Will I receive a refund on my hotel registration? When can I re-book my hotel reservation for the new dates?

As it pertains to USA Judo’s host event hotel, the Hilton Salt Lake City Center, all individual reservations will be fully refunded if canceled up to 72 hours before your scheduled arrival by calling 1-800-HILTONS. However, the Hilton has asked if you plan to cancel, please do so sooner than later. Click here for a letter sent by Hilton CEO, Chris Nassetta, regarding how Hilton is addressing COVID-19-impacted reservations. A link for new room reservations for August’s event will be posted within the next week through August 11, 2020. Please check the USA Judo Website and social media outlets for when the link is live

•   Can I get a refund on the flight I’ve already purchased?

Each airline has its own refund policies and some have implemented more flexible refund/rebooking policies than others as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. You will need to contact the airline from whom you purchased your ticket for more information. Please be prepared for lengthy call wait times due the volume of cancellations and rebookings taking place worldwide. If possible, it is recommended that you coorindate your cancellations and rebookings on-line via the airline’s website. We have also been informed by some participants that airlines are seeking a letter acknowledging the cancellation of an event to determine if they will provide a refund. Hopefully this letter will suffice. If not, please contact Corinne Shigemoto or Austin Leath.

•   How will this impact the qualification process for the 2020 Jr. World Championships, Jr. & Cadet Pan Am Championships and Cadet World Championships?

It has been determined that the trials for the 2020 Cadet & IJF Jr. Pan Am Championships (July 11-12), the IJF Jr. World Championships (August 17-20), and Cadet World Championships (August 22-25) will take place during the 2020 USA Judo Senior National Championships to take place May 16-17 in Daytona Beach, Florida. For more information regarding the criteria, please click here.

•   Will the 2020 USA Judo Senior National Championships still take place in Daytona Beach May 16-17, 2020?

USA Judo currently has all intentions of hosting the 2020 USA Judo Senior National Championships as originally scheduled. However, we will continue to monitor the ever-changing information surrounding the COVID-19 Pandemic and make decisions that are in the best interest of the health and safety of USA Judo’s Members.
