The 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival: Competition opportunity for athletes born in 1997 or 1998

Nov. 14, 2012, 4:30 p.m. (ET)

The 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival is a multi-sport event, featuring 19 sports, including Judo. The event will be held at the Olympic facilities in Sydney, Australia.

Eligibility is limited ONLY to athletes born in 1997 or 1

The Judo competition will include two Australian Teams, a combined Oceania Union Team and Teams from Chinese Taipei, Korea, Brazil, China, Japan and the United States.

The contested weight divisions will be:

Male: 60kg, 66kg, 73kg, 81kg and +81kg

Female: 48kg, 52kg, 57kg, 63kg and +63kg

Eligibility is limited ONLY to athletes born in 1997 or 1998. Since these birth years involve two different rosters – the Juvenile A and Juvenile B - each person who, after reading all of the information below, is interested in participating, should submit a resume of Judo accomplishments along with your request, as explained later in this letter.

In the event that you are selected for this event, you will be provided full room and board for the entire trip, and Team uniforms as dispensed by the United States Olympic Committee. You will be responsible for your own plane fare.

IF YOU MAY BE interested in claiming one of the Team spots, you will need the following information to aid in your decision:

Opening Ceremonies are on January 16, so your arrival will need to be on January 15, 2013. I have done a brief check on departures from Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and Chicago and it looks like you will need to leave on the 13th to arrive on the 15th. Should you travel from Honolulu, your departure would have to be on the 14th. Closing ceremonies are on January 20, so will need to depart from Sydney on the 21st.

This trip will include either 8 or 9 days depending on your departure city. There are two weekend days and MLK Day included, so you will be looking at needing 5 or 6 actual school days. USA Judo will be able to provide letters to your school administrators if needed.

If you are STILL interested and would like to be a part of the US Team that will compete in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, please send a request and your resume of Judo accomplishments to Jim Hrbek at NOT LATER THAN November 19, 2012.

Once you are selected, there is a required $250 security deposit. This is necessary because in the past year we have had a number of instances where people have “accepted” Team spots only to withdraw later and, in the process, deny other people the opportunity to compete.

Thank you.
