57 kg spot on team

August 21 - Jordan Mouton, a strong U.S. contender for a medal at the Paralympic Games set to begin next week in London, was forced to withdraw after suffering a concussion. She will be replaced on the team in 57 kg division by Cindy Simon, a silver medalist in 2010 Pan Am Championships for the Blind and the 2011 Parapan Amercian Championships.

Last year Mouton suffered a concussion when she and her sparring partner fell into a wall. Their heads collided and Mouton experienced dizziness, nausea and other symptoms from the injury. Mouton said she reduced training but subsequently reinjured her head multiple times in workouts. Mouton said she’d recently been feeling better and had returned to the mats. Then, less than two weeks ago, she was training when she hit her head, triggering the same serious dizziness and other symptoms she experienced last year.

Mouton said, “I’m stopping for right now to let it heal completely … It obviously needs time to heal but I’m not done with judo.”

“I’m very sad to see Jordan have to pull out. Jordan was a definite medal contender for the team,” said Eddie Liddie, USA Judo’s Director of High Performance. “With her placing last year at the World Championships, taking third place, we were really looking forward to seeing what she would do at these Paralympic Games.”

Liddie, along with U.S. Paralympic Coach Scott Moore, Assistant Coach Heidi Moore and Team Leader Marc Vink, lead the team to London Thursday.

Simon, 41, of Wayne, N.J., lost to Mouton at the Paralympic Trials held in the spring in Irving, Texas, making Simon the alternate for the spot. She brings substantial competitive experience to the Games, including silver medals from two major Pan American tournaments.

A documentary about Mouton’s life and training approaching the Paralympic Games, titled “Blind Judoka,” was produced by Take Part TV. To view the first two episodes, link to
