Course Description: This introductory, foundational, four-hour interactive course in using weightlifting movements for sports performance designed for high school, club, and college coaches. The hybrid course structure will cover how to safely and effectively teach major lifts such as hang power cleans, squats, hang power snatches, deadlifts, and rows in a one-on-one or team setting. Coaches will learn how to determine athlete readiness, how to progress and regress exercises, and how to set up a training plan for a beginner athlete. The course includes online course modules, extensive technique videos, and sample beginner training plan along with live interaction with our instructors.

Learning Outcomes:

Anna Swisher, PhD, CSCS
Dr. Swisher currently serves as the Coach Education and Sport Science Manager at USA Weightlifting. Anna has served as a professor, strength and conditioning coach, track and field coach, international coach education director, and sport science consultant. She has held positions at several universities teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in exercise physiology, biomechanics, program design, sport nutrition, and strength training. After a collegiate career in track and field (throws), Anna fell in love with weightlifting and competed for 8 years and has enjoyed spreading the joy of weightlifting around the world in various roles. Anna earned her doctorate in Sport Physiology and Performance in 2016 and is passionate about teaching coaches to consider how to coach not just what to coach.


Anna earned her BA from Williams College in 2005 and her MA and PhD (Sport Physiology and Performance) from East Tennessee State University in 2009 and 2016. She resides in TN with her husband, daughter, and bees.

Mike Gattone, MS, CSCS
Mike currently serves as the Senior Director of Sports Performance and Coaching Education for USAW. He has been involved in weightlifting for over 30 years as an athlete, coach, technical official, NGB staff member, IWF committee member, and competition director. Mike is also the head coach of Forza Weightlifting Club in Grayslake, IL where he works with lifters at the local, national, and international level. Mike has extensive experience working in strength and conditioning from the youth to professional level. He is a former Manager of Coaching Education and Programs for the United States Olympic Committee and served as the Competition Director for the 1996 Olympic Games Weightlifting event.


Mike is an active teacher of USAW Coaching Certification courses and speaker on Strength and Conditioning and Coaching Education at venues around the nation and world. He is a nationally published author on Weightlifting and Strength & Conditioning and was the personal coach for Sydney Olympic Gold Medalist Tara Nott. Mike holds the highest coaching rank, Senior International Coach, from USAW and is also an NSCA-CSCS.
