I became a goal keeper by accident.
I didn’t know what field hockey was for the longest time and I certainly didn’t start off in goal, where one’s safety looked questionable. However, after making the junior varsity field hockey team in middle school, I was chosen to put on the pads. I don’t know if you’ve seen the equipment that a field hockey goalkeeper wears, but it’s not the easiest to maneuver in.
While I did my best to keep up with the play during my trial run, I ended up tripping and falling over my own two feet. To my great surprise, my coach was thrilled because she thought I dove for the ball. I did not correct her.
Goalies didn’t run as much as the rest of the team, and being the devoted athlete that I was, I knew that was the position for me! Sometimes, the best things in life happen by accident.
