NHL's Tkachuk Brothers Try Field Hockey

Hockey runs in the Tkachuk family, both on turf and ice. Earlier this week, Taryn Tkachuk, an athlete for Gateway Field Hockey Club, challenged her brothers Brady and Matthew to field hockey in the seventh episode of “Stuck with the Tkachuks” video series.

The brothers both play in the National Hockey League (NHL), and while play has paused due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, they are putting their athletic skills to the test by trying a different sport or game each week. This week, Taryn challenged her siblings to penalty strokes, 1v1 and penalty corners while matched up against Gateway alumni and current Yale goalkeeper, Luanna Summer.

“I thought it would be funny for them to try field hockey to see how hard it actually is so maybe they won’t be so hard on me when they watch me play,” said Taryn. “Overall they did better than I thought they would. It was probably much harder for them because they are naturally left handed players. I think Brady picked it up much quicker than Matthew but if both had more time to practice, they would be a lot better!”
"It was a pretty awesome experience and really fun seeing some NHL players try out field hockey," added Luanna. "People who don't know what field hockey is often thinks it's similar to ice hockey but this definitely showed it isn't. The shootouts were really entertaining because you can tell that Matthew and Brady were used to ice hockey sticks and not field hockey sticks. They were pretty good for never really playing field hockey before and I don't really have any tips except I know if they practiced they would be much better. I've never had the pleasure to play with Taryn on the same team but I have played against her and she is quite a talented goal scorer."
