Mental Side of Returning to Training

May 29, 2020, 12:04 p.m. (ET)

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced its commitment to join the nationwide movement to promote Mental Health Awareness Month in May through its “We Are Team USA” campaign. The promotion of “in this together” is focused on raising awareness around mental health resources and needs within the Team USA community and promoting a culture that encourages proactively seeking and delivering mental health support for everyone.

It is a strange time in the world. We have spent weeks at home, plans have been changed countless times and the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been postponed. Through this chaos no one has been training in gyms, pools or other group settings. Now we are talking about going back. That brings a range of emotions, including both excitement and fear. Athletes most likely feel excited to resume training and regain some pattern of normalcy. At the same time, there will be fears about so many unknowns and potential risks. At the link below, the USOPC Sport Psychology team has provided some resources to the mental side of returning to training.
