One of the longest-tenured field hockey coaches in Berks County has decided to retire.

Ann Schmidt, who as been the head coach at Conrad Weiser for the past 23 seasons, has announced she will not return to coach in 2021.

Among coaches in 2020, Schmidt's 23 years as head coach was surpassed only by Joyce Angstadt's 30 years as head coach at Fleetwood.

"I believe now is my time to step away and pursue other endeavors," Schmidt said. "I feel so blessed by the connections and friendships I have developed and nurtured over the decades."

Schmidt compiled a 241-187-18 record at Conrad Weiser, leading the Scouts to District 3 Class 2A championships in 2006 and 2010. Under Schmidt, the Scouts qualified for the District 3 Tournament 13 times, including 12 straight from 2004-15.

In addition, Schmidt served as head coach at Conrad Weiser when 2016 Olympic goalie Jackie (Kintzer) Briggs came through the program.

"I have had the pleasure to work with a myriad of educators, coaches, athletes, athletic directors and parents over my 30 years of coaching for Conrad Weiser High School," Schmidt said.

Schmidt is a library media specialist at Conrad Weiser. A graduate of Lemoyne College and Syracuse University, Schmidt was a 2016 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist.

Under Schmidt's leadership, Conrad Weiser was recognized by the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association as the 2015 Outstanding Individual School Library Program in Pennsylvania.
